Running Cat5e in Our New Office

月, 2007-07-16 08:01
Hi Everyone,

My organization, the St. Albans Community Justice Center, just relocated right down the street to a new-to-us office space.

Unfortunately, it is not currently wired for a network, which is something we need. I am debating over how to go about doing this and would like the advice of others here with some experience.

The wiring could be run on the surface through conduit (anyone have sources for conduit??), but that presents the issue of aesthetics and going between rooms. All of the walls between rooms are hollow, so I'm sure there's a way to do it, but I am unsure of how to run a conduit with 4-6 cat5e's in it through the wall.

Another option is to run the cable through the floor (from the central point) to the basement/crawl space and back up the wall/floor in each place a jack is needed. This method is probably not good because not only is the basement very wet, but much of it is not accessible (crawl space). It could be done for part of it, but I'm not totally sure.

Finally, I plan on having a cabinet of sorts mounted near the ceiling in one of the rooms to house the modem, router, switch, etc... Since it is a relatively small office, is it necessary to use a patch panel or should I just put another jack for each run and then a short patch cable from there to the switch.

Thanks so much!

Who is using facebook for their professional networking?

土, 2007-06-30 09:05
The buzz is now all about Facebook, as the newest and most useful, portable, easily configurable online social networking tool.

Who is using facebook, other than me?

using "for profit" merchant account for nonprofit event

金, 2007-06-22 23:30
we are a non profit hosting a one time event and would like to use paypal to accept online registration payments.

We don't really have a need for a full time merchant account. Our president owns his own retail business and accepts credit cards there.

Is it possible (legal) to accept non profit money through that account if it is transferred after the event to the non profit's checking account?
thanks in advance for your help

Databases for small organizations?

Do you use a content filter?

火, 2007-06-05 02:49
Does your nonprofit, library, or community center use a content filter? What level of security does it include, and what prompted your decision to install one? Are there any major pros or cons to using it?

Volunteer Scheduling Software

水, 2007-05-30 04:21
I'm looking for software that can help schedule volunteers (100's of them) for a multi-day, multi-venue event. I've thought about designing something in Access, but would like to find something that someone else would be willing to share as I don't have the time to create it myself.

Portable HTML editor

土, 2007-05-19 00:45
Can anyone recommend a freeware or open source portable HTML editor for use on a USB flash drive? The only ones I could find are NVU, but I don't like how it rearranges my source code, and HTML Portable Editor which doesn't have a preview option. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Important tip for posting a job effectively

木, 2007-05-17 07:55
Post your location in your subject line. It will give the job seekers an easier and quicker way to rule out a job that is not in their location.

Also, remember that these posts should only be tech jobs for nonprofit orgs.

Thanks,

Susan

How do you protect your nonprofit's forms and forums?

水, 2007-05-16 08:41
Do your online forms and forums receive much spam? If so, how do you protect them? If you've tried a product that has been particularly helpful (or unhelpful) let other nonprofits know about it here.

Has your org implemented a content-filtering policy?

木, 2007-05-10 06:50
Hi all,

I'm writing up a couple of FAQs on content filtering, which will include general advice and information, as well as info on filtering hardware and software. I've gotten a lot on info on the hardware and software angle, but one thing I'm still researching is tips on putting together a content-filtering policy.

If your organization has put together a content-filtering policy, I'd be interesting in learning what you chose to include, what's working, and what isn't working. Feel free to respond to this thread with your thoughts, or email me and we can talk more.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can share.

Incorporating Blog into website

火, 2007-05-01 04:42
Hi all,

I have just created a blog with wordpress, and I'd like to incorporate this blog into our existing website at www.globalhood.org. I'd like the blog to look like the rest of our website, and also have a URL that's something like www.globalhood.org/blog, rather than www.globalhood.wordpress.org.

I tried reading the Wordpress tutorials on this topic, but found them confusing. If anyone could tell me how to do what I want to do in simple terms, that would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

Web analytics tools

Digital Storytelling Best Practice - copyright issues

金, 2007-03-30 00:14
What do the rest of you Storytelling practicioners do about IPR issues - a lot of the amateur work I see online shamelessley (and inpolitely) steals work from other people... I have often heard the "if it's online it's free to use" argument (which is really "if it's easy to do it can't be illegal"!).
Young people in particular want to grab handfuls of material from online and CD (understandably, it's nice to have your favourite music under your story) but for us, as a Media Centre working with artists, I feel it's important to be aware of Intellectual Property Rights, so I'm very strict about it. On BristolStories.org, we have a database-driven system for crediting everyone whose work's been used, and insist that it comes from sources that clearly give permission.
How do you handle it? Is it wrong to say "no" to people? Is it a good thing to force people to create their own artwork and music?

What cloning software do you recommend?

土, 2007-03-10 07:06
Has your nonprofit cloned your computer systems before? If so, what software package did you use? Was it an affordable solution? Were you satisfied with the results?

Ideas for endowment software?

木, 2007-03-08 23:57
My organization is looking for an endowment management software. The Sage software endowment is not freestanding so it will not work with our other software (Great Plains, Raisers Edge). Does anyone know of, or have experience with, endowment mgmgt software?

Thanks, Tony

Setting up a separate wireless network

金, 2007-02-23 23:37
I'm running SBS 2003 Premium. We have 4 other buildings in our small complex, 3 of which are used as sleeping/living quarters for researchers. I'd like to let them use our internet access to surf the internet, do email, etc. in their off-time, but am worried about security, etc. I presently have the wireless extension as part of the network, and all are users in some form of the LAN. What's a better way to do this? A separate wireless network with a router?
