teaching computing in Samoa

火, 2008-01-22 11:29

hi everyone
I am a Peace Corps volunteer in Samoa, who will be teaching computers, science, and maybe math at a secondary school in the small village of Savaia. I just wanted to say hello, and see if there are any other peace corps people who use techsoup.

I also wanted to ask if anyone knows of any computer teaching related curriculum specific for teaching overseas…or better yet computer curriculum for teaching in Samoa (either in Samoan or in English). School has not started yet, but from what other volunteers have said, some students have a really hard time with some of the computer concepts. I’m looking for creative ways to explain these concepts (like the concept of computer files).

I’m trying to post adventures to my blog if your interested.

How to find that Outlook Email

金, 2008-01-18 09:06
Do you use Outlook for your email? If you're like most people, you probably get tons of mail a day and don't necessarily remember the folder you filed that important email under. TechSoup blog has tips on how to find that email in Outlook.

I'm excited to learn this new trick for managing email in Outlook. Another Outlook search tool that I have used is x1, a free Outlook search tool.

What Outlook management tricks do you use? Share your favorite tips here.

Moving Microsoft Server 2003/Exchange 2003 to a new drive

木, 2007-11-22 00:55
Does anybody have directions/advice on how to copy a drive holding MS Exchange 2003 running on Server 2003 onto a new drive? Would it be as simple as imaging the entire current drive onto the new one ?

What I am dealing with is a single Exchange 2003 server running Microsoft Server 2003. It has two drives, one of which is quickly running out of drive space (this is the system disk holding the OS and program files). I have moved all of the files I can off of this drive to free up room so my only alternative, that I can think of, is to replace the current drive with a new larger one.

The question is can I image the entire current system drive onto the new drive and expect things to run smoothly.

TIA.

Project Management Software

金, 2007-11-02 02:37
We are a fairly small nonprofit with a large number for resources (contractors/consultants) on multiple projects. We're investigating purchasing project management software and I've read the thread from a few years back but was wondering if anyone had suggestions or experience they'd like to share pertaining to software they currently use. One important factor is Mac compatibility as we use both PC & Mac in our office.

My co-worker has done some preliminary research and has narrowed it down to the following: MSProject, At Task, Quick Base, VertaBase, AutoTask, and Kick Start.

Thanks for your input,
Ursula Lobacz

Project KickStart

日, 2007-10-21 02:06
After downloading the trial version of MS Project I think it might be overkill.

I downloaded a copy of Project Kickstart which costs alot more then MSProject for non profits and has alot less features.

Does anyone use Project Kickstart and do you think its worth the cost?

Web Conferencing programs

水, 2007-09-05 07:23
Sooner or later I think we'll need to get one of these, to cut down on travel costs when teleconferencing won't suffice. Program capabilities are improving and becoming more useful. I'd like to know what programs are out there. One staff member was asked to use Elluminate (http://www.elluminate.com) by someone at another non-profit, and that was easy to set up from our end, but I don't know if it's something we might want to purchase ourselves or not. I used WebEx free trial to watch a video on FileMaker, but I don't think we need something like that. Mainly we'd be looking for a way that our staff can make a presentation using PowerPoint and have the other people able to see and hear it on their computers, wherever they are, and be able to ask questions. Can any of you tell me about programs you use, similar types of programs, and about their costs?

Microsoft Word: page border doesn't print

火, 2007-08-28 22:52
I'm trying to put a border on a Word document and when I go to print, I get:
The page borders of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?

No matter how I finagle the margins (or try the suggestions on Microsoft's site), I can't seem to fix this. So what happens is that (in portrait mode), the bottom half of the border does not print. Any suggestions?
Thank you all.

Need a help (desk)?

土, 2007-08-18 02:50
Does your organization need an easy way to keep track of all its tech issues? Many nonprofits often have to come up with different ways to patch together a "help desk" to track and manage technical problems. TechSoup Blog points out a free help desk application that can provide a system for tracking IT problems.

How does your organization track "help desk" tech problems? What solutions have you found to be effective?
